Dr. Tim Podlogar is an exercise physiologist who is passionate about helping humans go faster and longer. As the Head of Research and Development at Nduranz, he puts his expertise in sports science to practical use, bridging cutting-edge research with real-world solutions to create products that improve endurance performance.

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Podlogar’s expertise spans several key areas within exercise physiology. His primary research interests include sports nutrition, exercise metabolism, environmental physiology, and endurance performance. He is particularly focused on understanding how metabolism functions before, during, and after exercise, and how it is influenced by the ingestion of different macronutrients.

His ultimate goal is to translate this scientific knowledge into strategies which enhance athletic performance, enabling athletes optimize their training, nutrition, and recovery.

Academic Background

Dr. Tim Podlogar has an impressive academic background. He completed his undergraduate studies in Kinesiology at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2015. He then obtained a Master’s (2016) and PhD (2020) in carbohydrate metabolism at the University of Birmingham, under the guidance of Dr. Gareth Wallis. His PhD work contributed significantly to the understanding of carbohydrate metabolism in endurance sports.

Postdoctoral Research and Career

After his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia. Under the guidance of Dr. Tadej Debevec, he investigated ketone body and menthol supplementation in extreme environments. In addition to his research, Dr. Podlogar served as an Assistant Professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Primorska, Slovenia.

In late 2021, Dr. Podlogar returned to the University of Birmingham as a Research Fellow, where he collaborated with Dr. Gareth Wallis on a project studying the effects of heat acclimation on exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rates. After completing this project in September 2024, Dr. Podlogar joined the University of Exeter as a Lecturer, continuing his groundbreaking work in sports science.

Collaboration with Nduranz and Professional Athletes

Dr. Podlogar joined Nduranz in 2020 and has been integral to helping the brand develop its products. Under his guidance, Nduranz became the first sports nutrition brand to introduce the optimal 1:0.8 glucose to fructose ratio across its entire product line.

In addition to his work with Nduranz, Dr. Podlogar works directly with athletes as a nutritionist and consultant. His expertise helped one athlete win a Giro and another to win a Vuelta. He is also a co-founder of the Human Performance Centre in Slovenia, where he continues to influence sports performance research.

Personal Interests

When he’s not immersed in research or working with athletes, Dr. Podlogar is an avid cyclist, dedicating over 700 hours to cycling every year. This passion for endurance sports fuels his drive to continually push the boundaries of human performance.
