The Nduranz Carbohydrate Ratio is the 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin (a form of glucose) and fructose. This ratio was discovered to be the best by Prof. Rowlands and his team in New Zealand when they were investigating different ratios of glucose and fructose.
While many companies are still blind to the effectiveness of this ratio and choose to produce products using other ratios, or even don't include fructose at all, we at Nduranz are strong believers in science and follow the newest scientific discoveries very strictly.
Both energy transporters
The main reason why the Nduranz Carbohydrate Ratio is recommended is that it uses two different kinds of transporters for the movement of carbohydrates from the intestines into the bloodstream. This is very important because glucose transporters (SGLT1 and GLUT2) get saturated at approximately 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour. Ingesting fructose allows utilization of the GLUT5 transporter, which raises the amount of carbohydrate transport into the bloodstream per hour.
Once in the bloodstream, glucose can be used directly by the muscles, whereas fructose first needs to be transported to the liver where it is converted into glucose and lactate. Both molecules are subsequently transported back into the bloodstream from where they are up-taken by the muscle tissue. This is also one of the reasons why blood lactate concentrations are increased after ingestion of fructose. Lactate is just another energy source, so do not be afraid of it.
Being able to absorb more carbohydrates per hour naturally increases the amount of energy available to the athlete, making it obvious that ingesting a combination of glucose and fructose seems the reasonable way to go to increase energy and consequently improve athletic capacity.
In addition to this, it appears that combining both carbohydrate sources in the 1:0.8 ratio also improves gastrointestinal comfort and reduces the chances that some unwanted gut feelings occur.
What about recovery?
So, it is clear the 1:0.8 ratio is useful to improve athletic performance, but what about recovery?
Dr Tim Podlogar and his colleagues performed studies investigating whether a combination of glucose and fructose also improves recovery.
The first study showed a 32.4% increase in exercise capacity (time until exhaustion) when using a combination of glucose and fructose opposed to using only glucose for recovery.
The second study did not reveal improvements in cycling exercise performance (time to cover a certain distance). However, the study did reveal higher oxydation rates where the combination of glucose and fructose was used, meaning higher availability of carbohydrates. This leads to the speculation that over a longer period of time, the combination of glucose and fructose would translate to improved athletic performance.
Science is still working hard to get all the answers about nutrition, and the answers seem ever elusive.
Nevertheless, the 1:0.8 ratio of glucose and fructose has been revealed by many studies to be optimal for fueling and recovery, which is why we at Nduranz have adopted this ratio to be the ratio we stand by until science tells us otherwise.
